Overdose Information
Recognizing an Overdose
Signs of opioid overdose may include:
- Unresponsiveness or unconsciousness
- Slow, shallow breathing or no breathing
- Blue or purple lips and fingernails
- Pale, clammy skin
- Gurgling sounds
What to Do
- Call 911 immediately
- Administer naloxone (Narcan) if available
- Try to keep the person awake and breathing
- Place them on their side if unconscious but breathing
- Stay with them until help arrives
Virginia's Good Samaritan Law: Virginia law provides protection from prosecution for people who call for help during an overdose. Don't be afraid to call 911.
